ROMY & MICHELE

Romy & Michele's High School Reunion is one of those absolute cult classics for me. When my sister first introduced me to it, I was immediately in awe of the 2 hilariously embarrassing, yet real fashionista's.

To give you a little background, while on a mission to their school's 10 year reunion, BFF's Romy & Michele go on a last ditch attempt to become successful, well-rounded females. This involves the true to life struggles of finding jobs, finding men & losing weight. I'm pretty sure these are things we're all familiar with but the true beauty of this film is that it teaches us to throw all that rubbish out the window. Screw trying to please people, particularly men & malicious high school bullies.

In every school there will always be the "popular" girls who just need a face wipe & a slap, & there will always be the heart throb who ruins the Prince Charming persona that Disney's fought so hard to create. However, if Romy & Michele can overcome their critics in all their feather-trimmed, metallic goodness then so can we ladies!

Although the screenplay has it's moments of being wildly far-fetched (& endlessly quoteable), this is really just about 2 gal pals sticking together & being true to themselves, something we need more of in this world. Female empowerment shouldn't be mocked, it should be encouraged. As should business woman special's & interpretive dance to Cyndi Lauper.

WOMAN CRUSH WEDNESDAY: BADDIEWINKLE

Helen Ruth Van Winkle – this probably isn’t a name you instantly recognise but that's because this mega-babe is more widely renowned for being the one & only, Baddie Winkle. With the help of her great-granddaughter Kennedy (@psychicbabe) this 87 year old minx shot to internet stardom last year for being 100% badass, identified by psychedelic tee’s emblazoned with sassy slogans & marijuana leaves.

I never thought that I could become so immensely jealous of an octogenarians wardrobe but just one look at Baddie’s Instagram & you’ll be consumed by the green-eyed monster too. There’s colour, there’s cleavage, there’s sequins. She can even be seeing sporting a dress with her own face painted on it. Safe to say this is one confident pensioner & rightly so! Who says that as you get older your life should be confined to that of itchy cardi’s & ankle length skirts? Who says you can't flash a bit of thigh past 50?

While writing this however, I couldn’t help but think of the backlash that a 20 something would get for this behaviour & outfit choices – someone like Miley Cyrus. Photographed together, it’s hard not to notice the similar characteristics but the judgement that Miley receives compared to the praise Baddie gets does seem slightly unfair. Oh society, when will you learn to allow & accept all forms of personal expression?

Following on from the huge success she’s found in 2015, I’m sure 2016 is set to be just as wild for Baddie. I truly do wish great things for her – having created this persona as a way of coping with her husband’s death, this fab lady truly deserves it. I’m personally hoping she creates her own clothing line because I would rock the hell out of it!
For inspo on how to be babein' no matter what your age, have a look at my favourite Baddie moments below & check @baddiewinkle for more awesomeness.

SASSY RAINBOW NAIL ART TUTORIAL

I've always loved doing my nails & after training as a beauty therapist, that love grew. I taught myself how to do nail art & now I'm going to teach Sassy World readers! This is one of my favourite designs as it's crazy colourful although it does take a steady hand, but if you've got the time & the patience then it's well worth it.

Here's what you'll need:
A nail file - Cuticle remover/oil - Cuticle pusher & cutters - Thin nail art brush - Cotton wool - Nail polish remover - Base & top coats - White nail polish - A selection of super sassy coloured nail polishes

1. Start by giving your nails a file so they're nice & even. TOP TIP - always file in 1 direction, not back & forth as this can cause breaks & damage

2. Rub a lil cuticle remover or oil onto your cuticles to help soften before pushing them back. I love CND CuticleAway which I get from a beauty suppliers but you can get it off Amazon too.

3. Once pushed back, carefully nip your cuticles away. Don't go too far down though or you'll end up cutting yourself & we don't want any booboo's here!

4. Apply a base coat to protect your nails from any staining. I like to use OPI Nail Envy to keep my claws nice & strong.

5. To make your colours look brighter, apply a coat of white nail polish - I used OPI's Alpine Snow.

6. Now to the fun part, the colour!  Just dip your brush into the polish & wipe any excess off back into the bottle. I used some Rimmel 60 Seconds polishes in Libertine (pink), Double Decker Red, One Last Tango, Chin Up Buttercup, Wedge of Lime & Lovey Dovey (purple). You can buy nail art brushes super cheap on eBay or Amazon, but I got this cute floral set from my local Sally's.

7. Start your design by creating a thin, wavy line in the middle of your nail.

8. Follow this line with your next polish, working your way up towards your cuticle. Keep going with this, alternating colours each time & making sure to clean your brush in between each colour with the remover & cotton wool.

9. Now go ahead & work from the middle down until you reach your tip, following the lines you've already made.

10. Fill in the corners of your nails & paint along the edge of your nail tip too.

11. If you need to, go back & smooth/even out any of your lines to make 'em as straight as possible.

12. Wait for your coloured polish to dry then apply a top coat - I used OPI's Rapidry.

13. Take a moment to stare loving at the sass you've just created on your fingertips.

SPICE UP YOUR LIFE

Stop. Right now. Thank you very much!

I was only 4 when Spice World: The Movie came out but it changed my life. I was obsessed, making my Mum put it on repeat, back in the days of VHS when you had to rewind all the way back to the beginning. I'll admit though, I probably hadn't watched this in about 16 years since 2000 when the girls split up (such a tragedy!), however when the film was recently released on Netflix my young 90's heart ached. The nostalgia came flooding in & by the end of watching, I was downloading their albums.

We all know that this movie isn't exactly a Tarantino or a Spielberg but that's what makes it so fab! The one liners, the celeb cameos & the plot twists that make absolutely no sense. The inside of a tour bus that's bigger than Harrods. Don't even get me started on the aliens.

Apart from being strangely hilarious, the film is full of crazy outfits & platforms galore. How those girls didn't break their ankles I'll never know! My personal favourites have to be Ginger's feather collared corset & Baby's babydoll & tiara combo - what a princess.

Looking past the sass & the fashion though, Spice World is really just full of little life lessons on friendship & of course, girl power. Check my round-up of all the best bits below, make sure to get yourself over to Netflix & next time you're out with your gang, just make sure to slam your body & wind it all around. (God I love puns!)

WOMAN CRUSH WEDNESDAY: ANJELICA ROSELYN

Let's just take a minute to praise Miss Dariah here. 24 years old, this beauty is not only a designer but one of the most colourful fashion illustrators around. Like seriously, you can't look at any of her art & think 'Oh, that's bland' - if you do, get yourself to Specsavers pronto!

Being a London College of Fashion grad, Anjelica's designs are obviously not something to be ignored. Her SS15 dresses have nabbed her features in various magazines & rightly so. Who said major elastic was only meant for gym shorts & Bridget Jones' pants? I also have an inherent love for anything & everything pink so this girl's a winner in my book.

Looking at her illustrations you'll see more of this love for fun & colour which clearly is her main inspo. If you're not already, get following her on IG - I bet you £10 you'll lose yourself for a solid 20 minutes in her endless, sassy sketches. You'll even spot a few familiar faces on there...

It's safe to say that Anjelica is someone to be admired. Confident & empowering, this gal gets the Sassy World seal of approval 1000x over."

Go and get yourselves lost in her rainbow, psychedelic instagram account which is full to the brim of major eye candy: @anjelicaroselyn

MEET THE NEW GIRL BEHIND THE BLOG

"Hey! Nope, too boring. Hola! What no, you're not Spanish. Howdy! You are most certainly not a cowboy, Hannah."

These are genuinely the thoughts that just went through my head whilst trying to decide how to open my first blog post for Sassy World. There's a lot of pressure on a girl when she gets a dream opportunity like this, you know! I may not have been blogging for too long myself but I can promise you guys 3 things: 1) I know fashion. 2) I know the 90s. 3) I know sass. Endless, cosmic, gargantuan, amounts of sass. So much sass it hurts. So much so that...well you get the point, a whole lotta sassiness.

But just you get to know the gal behind the sarcastic remarks, here's a lil Q&A for you all - enjoy!

Name: Hannah Marie Russell
Location: Hertfordshire, UK (basically London for those who have no idea where Hertfordshire is)
Fave Colour: 100% pink!
Fave 90s Film: Clueless or She's All That
What's the sassiest item of clothing you own: A pair of pink, velvet ankle boots
Sum up your style in 3 words: Quirky, experimental, temperamental
Most prized possession: A pistol necklace that I've had since I was 13
Who's your style icon: Am I allowed to say the Confetti Crowd? (Sassy World girl boss, Helena is part of it!) Shortly followed by my older sister.
What beauty product can't you live without: Dry shampoo - the inventor deserves a medal.
Pick 3 celebs to have at a dinner party: Ryan Reynolds, James Cordon & Jennifer Lawrence

Stay tuned for sassy inspo, girl boss crushes, nail tutorials and more!
