BUFFY THE SLAY QUEEN

Once upon a time, when I was about 8/9 years old, we had a fancy dress day at my primary school & I choose to go as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Complete with a crucifix & an photo of Angel tucked into my pocket, I felt totally badass. So badass that I even kicked a boy in the nuts for making me jump (it was the first time I was sent to stand at the railings for all of lunch, a weird form of detention).

This Thursday marked the 19th anniversary of the show & I don't know about you but although it's been 13 years since the final episode, I'm still mourning the loss of the preppy heroine! Buffy Summers was someone I idolized, proving that the lil blonde girl doesn't always have to be the damsel in distress. Buffy would never be the first to die in a horror film, she'd be too busy destroying the monster & his entire clan too. While still looking super cute. She literally SLAYS.

We can't forget the other characters though - remember Giles? The sweet father figure who lived to protect Buffy. Or how about Willow the witch? Not forgetting my personal favourite: Spike. Oh Spike, with your beautiful peroxide curls & killer cheekbones. He's like an evil Billy Idol. As much as the love between Buffy & Angel was adorable, I always held a flame for this badboy. Everyone loves an underdog & Spike's unrequited love was definitely enough to make my heart melt. It also helps that he's perpetually British & sarcastic too.

Thinking back, there was a whole lotta love in this show. Spike for Buffy. Dawn for Spike. Willow for Tara. That was pretty hard hitting right? I don't remember a lot of 90's teen shows that took on the subject of lesbian love affairs so beautifully. Although full of high browed demons, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was real. It portrayed some hard-hitting life issues but through a fantasy viewpoint, making it the perfect series to grow up with (although I won't lie, some of the monsters did give me nightmares - just google 'The Gentlemen' & you'll see).

Check out some of my favourite Buffy moments below then head over to Netflix to get your Sunnydale fix!

WOMAN CRUSH WEDNESDAY: ISABEL HENDRIX

Fashion blogger, plus-sized model, vintage clothing vendor - Isabel Hendrix must have one pretty impressive CV! The minute I laid eyes on this brightly-coloured cutie, I knew it was social media love. Her impressive wardrobe is certainly enviable but more importantly, its Isabel’s positivity & body confidence that sets her apart from the crowd.

Never one to blend in, Ms Hendrix’s Instagram is a portfolio of fun, showcasing an array of figure hugging miniskirts & crop tops. Her signature style is so playful, so true to herself & unafraid of what many expect in the fashion world, making her somewhat of a rebel & probably a top reason as to why I adore her so. I wish I looked half as good as this beauty, breaking all the rules. Her clothing site, Tunnel Vision (@tunnelvision) is equally as fabulous, full to the brim of technicolour goodness & somewhere I can easily splurge far too much money – thank god for worldwide shipping!

In a world where girls are often being told that skinny is beautiful & perfection is something to strive towards, this babe is promoting a different angle & hitting the nail on the head. In an interview with Golden Boy Press, Isabel said she just wanted to “see the world become a better place, a more equal place, a more loving place.” Couldn’t have said it better myself. Using the internet to inspire, she’s fast becoming a true icon for everyone to look up to, not just females. I know a fair share of guys who could work on their self-love too!

If you’re a fan of sartorial risk taking, take a looksee at our favourite shots below & get yourself over to @isabel_hendrix on Instagram to lose yourself in her rainbow world.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

March 8th. Without googling, do you know why tomorrows date's important? No? Thought so. I guess it is slightly overshadowed by Mother's Day however if you have a set of ovaries & enjoy girl power you should definitely make yourself familiar with March 8th.

It is International Women's Day after all.

This global celebration has been going since the early 1900's, powering some influential marches & protests, campaigning great change for us ladyfolk. It's a day to celebrate all we've offered & achieved & also to stand up & fight for what we deserve - equality. 'Cause women are inspirational. We do some amazing things such as multi-tasking, dealing with menstrual cramps & oh yeah, we can grow tiny humans inside our stomachs - I'd like to see a guy give that one a go!

All around the world there are events being held tomorrow in support of this wondrous day, including a festival in Palestine & a march through New Delhi. If you haven't heard of the @CreamSodaGirlz, check them out as they're hosting an event in London. Their BOSSY night is set to be big. plus the pink perfection that is Snoochie Shy, who's 1/5 Confetti Crowd, is part of this collective. To find a local event in your area, visit the IWD website here. While you're there, make sure to Pledge for Parity too, in order to help out with this gender equality debacle.

I'm sure you can all have your own lady-love's that you look up to, whether that's your Mum or a celeb, but here's 10 fab females we love & sticking to true Sassy World style, they're all connected to our fav decade - the 90s.

1. Helen Fielding - Author & creator of Bridget Jones, 1996. Thank you for creating a fictional character we can all relate to.

2. Bjork - Singer of 'It's Oh So Quiet' in 1995. Icelandic risk taker & boundary pusher.

3. Charlotte Pickles - Businesswoman & mother on the Rugrats, 1991-2003. Proving you can juggle work & family.

4. Mae Jemison - First African-American woman to travel space, 1992. One great leap for womankind

5. Donatella Versace - Creative Director of Versace, 1997. People speculated she couldn't do it...pfft!

6. Dame Stella Rimington - First female general director of MI5, 1992. The real life M from James Bond.

7.  Spice Girls - Girl band, 1994. Girl power by the bucket load.

8. Ab Fab's Eddie & Patsy - Vodka drinking, chain smoking TV duo, 1992. Changing the face of comedy TV forever.

9. Gwen Stefani - General awesome singer throughout the 90's. Portraying flamboyant fashion & a powerhouse voice.

10. Drew Barrymore - Wild child movie star, 1993. Followed her own style & now fights for the LGBT community.

ROMY & MICHELE

Romy & Michele's High School Reunion is one of those absolute cult classics for me. When my sister first introduced me to it, I was immediately in awe of the 2 hilariously embarrassing, yet real fashionista's.

To give you a little background, while on a mission to their school's 10 year reunion, BFF's Romy & Michele go on a last ditch attempt to become successful, well-rounded females. This involves the true to life struggles of finding jobs, finding men & losing weight. I'm pretty sure these are things we're all familiar with but the true beauty of this film is that it teaches us to throw all that rubbish out the window. Screw trying to please people, particularly men & malicious high school bullies.

In every school there will always be the "popular" girls who just need a face wipe & a slap, & there will always be the heart throb who ruins the Prince Charming persona that Disney's fought so hard to create. However, if Romy & Michele can overcome their critics in all their feather-trimmed, metallic goodness then so can we ladies!

Although the screenplay has it's moments of being wildly far-fetched (& endlessly quoteable), this is really just about 2 gal pals sticking together & being true to themselves, something we need more of in this world. Female empowerment shouldn't be mocked, it should be encouraged. As should business woman special's & interpretive dance to Cyndi Lauper.

See our fave fashion moments from the film below <3

WOMAN CRUSH WEDNESDAY: BADDIEWINKLE

Helen Ruth Van Winkle – this probably isn’t a name you instantly recognise but that's because this mega-babe is more widely renowned for being the one & only, Baddie Winkle. With the help of her great-granddaughter Kennedy (@psychicbabe) this 87 year old minx shot to internet stardom last year for being 100% badass, identified by psychedelic tee’s emblazoned with sassy slogans & marijuana leaves.

I never thought that I could become so immensely jealous of an octogenarians wardrobe but just one look at Baddie’s Instagram & you’ll be consumed by the green-eyed monster too. There’s colour, there’s cleavage, there’s sequins. She can even be seeing sporting a dress with her own face painted on it. Safe to say this is one confident pensioner & rightly so! Who says that as you get older your life should be confined to that of itchy cardi’s & ankle length skirts? Who says you can't flash a bit of thigh past 50?

While writing this however, I couldn’t help but think of the backlash that a 20 something would get for this behaviour & outfit choices – someone like Miley Cyrus. Photographed together, it’s hard not to notice the similar characteristics but the judgement that Miley receives compared to the praise Baddie gets does seem slightly unfair. Oh society, when will you learn to allow & accept all forms of personal expression?

Following on from the huge success she’s found in 2015, I’m sure 2016 is set to be just as wild for Baddie. I truly do wish great things for her – having created this persona as a way of coping with her husband’s death, this fab lady truly deserves it. I’m personally hoping she creates her own clothing line because I would rock the hell out of it!
For inspo on how to be babein' no matter what your age, have a look at my favourite Baddie moments below & check @baddiewinkle for more awesomeness.

SASSY RAINBOW NAIL ART TUTORIAL

I've always loved doing my nails & after training as a beauty therapist, that love grew. I taught myself how to do nail art & now I'm going to teach Sassy World readers! This is one of my favourite designs as it's crazy colourful although it does take a steady hand, but if you've got the time & the patience then it's well worth it.

Here's what you'll need:
A nail file - Cuticle remover/oil - Cuticle pusher & cutters - Thin nail art brush - Cotton wool - Nail polish remover - Base & top coats - White nail polish - A selection of super sassy coloured nail polishes

1. Start by giving your nails a file so they're nice & even. TOP TIP - always file in 1 direction, not back & forth as this can cause breaks & damage

2. Rub a lil cuticle remover or oil onto your cuticles to help soften before pushing them back. I love CND CuticleAway which I get from a beauty suppliers but you can get it off Amazon too.

3. Once pushed back, carefully nip your cuticles away. Don't go too far down though or you'll end up cutting yourself & we don't want any booboo's here!

4. Apply a base coat to protect your nails from any staining. I like to use OPI Nail Envy to keep my claws nice & strong.

5. To make your colours look brighter, apply a coat of white nail polish - I used OPI's Alpine Snow.

6. Now to the fun part, the colour!  Just dip your brush into the polish & wipe any excess off back into the bottle. I used some Rimmel 60 Seconds polishes in Libertine (pink), Double Decker Red, One Last Tango, Chin Up Buttercup, Wedge of Lime & Lovey Dovey (purple). You can buy nail art brushes super cheap on eBay or Amazon, but I got this cute floral set from my local Sally's.

7. Start your design by creating a thin, wavy line in the middle of your nail.

8. Follow this line with your next polish, working your way up towards your cuticle. Keep going with this, alternating colours each time & making sure to clean your brush in between each colour with the remover & cotton wool.

9. Now go ahead & work from the middle down until you reach your tip, following the lines you've already made.

10. Fill in the corners of your nails & paint along the edge of your nail tip too.

11. If you need to, go back & smooth/even out any of your lines to make 'em as straight as possible.

12. Wait for your coloured polish to dry then apply a top coat - I used OPI's Rapidry.

13. Take a moment to stare loving at the sass you've just created on your fingertips.
